The Rainger Duo 1.7M is a compact freestanding 270 degree awning built specifically for Suzuki Jimny, Jeep Wrangler and short-wheelbase 4WD setups where weight, size and roof load actually matter. At approximately 19kg it is one of the lightest 270° awnings on the market — and one of the few that keeps a Jimny JB74 legal on the roof when paired with the right crossbars. It swings out from the passenger side, wraps 270° across the side and rear of your rig, and is tensioned and ready to use in seconds.
This is a 4-arm 270° awning with no front arms — one pivot point at the rear, one ratchet rope, done. Same proven Rainger Duo design as our full-size 2.5M model, scaled down for compact touring rigs that need practical shade without the bulk, the weight, or the complicated setup that comes with oversized awnings on small vehicles.
Built from 280GSM blackout ripstop canvas in Desert Tan or Midnight Black, with integrated dual-colour LED lighting on all four arms. After dark, your campsite is lit without a single extra light bar, cable tie, or power lead to set up.
In stock. Ships Australia-wide from Baringa, QLD. Residential delivery available.

Built for Jimny, Jeep and SWB Rigs — Not Just a Smaller Awning
Most 270 degree awnings are designed for full-size tourers and dual-cab utes — then marketed as "also suitable for smaller vehicles." The 1.7M Duo was designed the other way around. It starts with the constraints of a compact rig and builds from there.
-
19kg — light enough to keep a Jimny JB74 legal on Suzuki's 30kg dynamic roof rating when paired with carefully selected crossbars
-
1.7M arm length — proportional to SWB vehicles without excessive overhang
-
Compact packed size — sits neatly against the side of a Jimny, Jeep or short wagon without dominating the vehicle profile
-
No front arms — critical on a shorter vehicle where every centimetre of usable campsite space counts
Most awnings on the market will put a Suzuki Jimny overweight on the roof. This one, with the right rack or crossbar setup, keeps you legal. That matters for insurance, for warranty, and for the long-term health of your vehicle.
This is not just a smaller awning. It is the same proven Rainger Duo platform — same canvas, same LED system, same hardware quality, same design thinking — scaled for the vehicles that actually need it.
4-Arm Freestanding 270° — One Pivot, One Rope, Done
The Duo 1.7M is a 4-arm 270 degree awning that wraps from the passenger side across the rear of the vehicle. No front arms. One pivot point at the back. Swing it around, tension the ratchet rope, and you are done.
-
270° wrap across the passenger side and rear
-
No front arms — open, walkable campsite space from the moment the awning is out
-
Freestanding — hangs from your mounting surface (rack or crossbars) without needing ground contact to hold its shape
-
1.7M arm length — proportional shade coverage for compact rigs
Because there are no front arms to unfold, lock and position, the entire setup is one continuous motion. On a Jimny or Jeep where you are often setting up solo in tight campsite spots, this simplicity is everything.
Your rack or crossbars need to be strong enough to support the awning — it hangs entirely from the mounting surface. Contact us if you are unsure what your setup needs.
Setup in Seconds — One Person, Every Time
The Duo 1.7M goes from packed to fully deployed in under 20 seconds once you have done it a couple of times. One person. No tools. No help needed.
- Unzip the PVC bag and lift it over the top of the awning
- Release the 3 nylon straps holding the canvas up
- Connect the ratchet rope to the end attachment point
- Walk the awning around to its full 270° position
- Connect the ratchet rope to a suitable tie-down point on the other side of the vehicle and tension it
-
Optional: Drop the telescopic leg for additional support
-
Optional: Tie down with guy ropes in gusty conditions
-
Optional: Attach zipper wall kits for extra shade or wind protection
That is the entire process. The ratchet rope does the work — once it is tensioned, the awning is set. The telescopic leg is there if you want additional support, but the awning holds its shape without it.
Pack-down is the same steps in reverse. At 19kg it is light enough to manage comfortably on your own every time. For Jimny and SWB owners who camp solo or move camp daily, this is the awning you will actually bother deploying.
Integrated LED Lighting — Shade by Day, Light by Night
The Duo 1.7M includes LED lighting strips built into all four awning arms — the same system used on our full-size 2.5M model. When the arms swing out, the lights are already in position.
-
LED strips on all 4 arms (most competing brands light only 3)
-
Dual-colour output — warm white for camp ambience, cool white for task lighting
-
2 separate USB-A dimmer controllers — independent zone control
- Powered via 5V USB-A — plug into your power bank, vehicle USB, or battery system (power source not included)
To get the lights running, plug the 4 push-in connectors into the arms and connect the dimmer controllers to any USB-A power source. Takes a minute.
Two dimmer controllers give you independent lighting zones — handy on a compact setup where the cooking area and the sitting area are close together but you want different light levels. Most awnings give you one switch for the lot.
280GSM Blackout Ripstop Canvas
The Duo 1.7M uses 280GSM blackout ripstop canvas — the same fabric as our full-size models. Substantially heavier and more UV-resistant than the 200–220GSM polyester used on many competing 270 awnings.
- 280GSM blackout ripstop construction
- Full blackout underside — reduces radiant heat beneath the awning
- UV-rated for sustained Australian sun exposure
- Ripstop grid helps prevent small tears from spreading across the panel
The blackout underside makes a real difference on a compact awning. With less total shade area, keeping that area as cool and dark as possible matters more — and the blackout layer blocks heat transmission that standard canvas lets straight through.
Available in Desert Tan with coffee-brown nylon edging or Midnight Black for a more universal stealth look. Both colourways match the Revo-X roof top tent range if you ever move to a larger vehicle and build out a full Rainger touring setup.
Wall Kit Ready — Proper Zippers, Not Velcro
The Duo 1.7M comes pre-fitted with proper outdoor zippers at every wall attachment point — not Velcro. Velcro is the cheap way to attach awning walls. It loses grip when dirty, wears out over time, and lets wind pull walls away from the awning edge. Zippers hold firm, seal properly, and last.
-
Numbered labels at each wall position so you know exactly which wall goes where — no guessing during setup
-
Full outdoor-rated zippers pre-installed on the awning at each wall attachment point
- Wall kits sold separately — straight walls and angled walls available to suit different configurations
On a compact rig where the awning footprint is smaller, walls transform the usable space. A wall kit on the 1.7M creates a genuinely enclosed sheltered area that punches well above its size — useful in wind, rain, or when you just want a bit of privacy at a busy campsite.
Stability — Anti-Pooling Legs, Rain Tabs, Tie-Downs and Telescopic Leg
The Duo 1.7M includes the same stability systems as our full-size models:
-
2 x anti-pooling stand-up legs — hold the canvas up in key areas to prevent water sitting on the awning surface during rain
-
4 x rain tabs — stitched into the middle of each arm, right at the top of the seam. Tie a guy rope to each tab and it pulls the canvas down in the centre, creating a rain channel so water runs off the top of the awning instead of pooling. Because the tab is stitched from the top of the seam, no water pools at the end of the seam either.
-
4 x arm-end tie-down points — located at the end of each arm for direct guy rope anchoring to the ground when additional stability is needed in wind
-
1 x telescopic drop-down leg — height-adjustable, provides additional vertical support at the outer corner (optional use)
-
1 x easy-pull ratchet rope with hook — the primary tensioning system
The ratchet rope is what holds the awning taut. Tension it properly and the awning is set. The telescopic leg adds extra support if you want it, but the awning holds its shape without it.
In sustained wind, use the arm-end tie-down points with guy ropes and pegs for additional anchoring. Like any fabric awning, pack it away in severe storm conditions.
1000GSM PVC Awning Bag
The awning packs into a 1000GSM black PVC bag that sits against the side of your vehicle when not in use.
- 1000GSM PVC construction — heavy-duty, UV-stable, wipe-clean
- Rubber patch branding — not a cheap screen print. Will not fade, peel or deteriorate over time
- Internal anti-wick tongue under the zipper — reduces water tracking into the bag when driving in rain (standard zippers are not waterproof, and water entering through the zipper is one of the most common causes of mould in 270 awning bags across the market)
- Velcro storm flaps at the front and rear panels of the bag — secondary water protection covering the most exposed sections when driving into rain
These details limit how much water gets into the bag in the first place — but they do not eliminate it entirely. If your awning gets wet, air it out before long-term storage. Water sitting inside a closed bag for extended periods will cause mould on any canvas, regardless of brand. Check the bag periodically, especially after wet trips, and open it up to dry if needed.

Vehicle Compatibility
The 1.7M Duo is designed for compact and short-wheelbase vehicles where weight, size and roof load limits are real constraints. Purpose-built for:
- Suzuki Jimny JB74 (3-door)
- Suzuki Jimny XL (5-door)
- Suzuki Sierra
- Jeep Wrangler 2-door (JK / JL)
- Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series SWB
- Land Rover Defender 90
- Other SWB and compact 4WD setups
The awning mounts to roof racks, crossbars, or canopy rails. Your rack or crossbars must be strong enough to support the full weight of the awning — it hangs entirely from the mounting surface.
Also used on larger vehicles. Some owners of full-size utes, wagons and American trucks deliberately choose the 1.7M over a larger awning. The thinking is simple: keep it small, keep it light, keep it easy — and you will actually use it every time you stop. An awning that stays packed because it is too heavy or too much effort is not giving you any shade at all.

Mounting and Brackets — Get It Right the First Time
Mounting brackets are sold separately because no single bracket fits every setup on the market. Rather than including a generic bracket that may not work for your rig, we offer purpose-matched options:
-
Rainger Universal L-Brackets — 7-way adjustable, suits most roof rack and crossbar setups
-
Confirmed Fitment — ARB Heavy Duty Awning Brackets / Mega Jimny MGX PRO
-
Rack-specific brackets — some manufacturers (Rhino Rack, Front Runner, Yakima, Rola) offer brackets designed for their own systems
-
Rainger Revo-X Awning Brackets — if you are running a Revo-X RTT on a larger vehicle and want the 1.7M for its compact size
Mounting Best Practices
For the best result with this style of 270° awning on a compact rig:
-
Rear bracket first — mount the rearmost bracket as close to the awning pivot point as possible. This is the most important mounting position and carries the most load.
-
Minimum 700mm spacing — space the front bracket at least 700mm forward from the rear bracket. This is the minimum for adequate support on the 1.7M model.
-
Front bracket as far forward as possible — if your rack or crossbars allow it, push the front bracket further forward for the best overall load distribution.
Most of the support is needed at the rear near the pivot. Getting the rear bracket position right is the single most important piece of mounting advice for this awning.
Universal brackets provided by most awning brands rarely work well across the full range of setups. Getting the bracket solution right the first time saves you buying a second set later.
Contact us before ordering if you are unsure — we will walk you through what works best for your specific vehicle and rack setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will this awning fit a Suzuki Jimny?
Yes. The 1.7M Duo was designed specifically for the Suzuki Jimny JB74 and similar compact 4WDs. At approximately 19kg, it is one of the few 270 degree awnings light enough to keep a Jimny within Suzuki's 30kg dynamic roof load rating when paired with carefully selected crossbars or a lightweight rack. Most awnings on the market will put a Jimny overweight on the roof — this one, with the right setup, keeps you legal.
Does the 1.7M awning suit the Jimny XL (5-door)?
Yes. The Jimny XL is a longer vehicle but Suzuki has not changed the 30kg dynamic roof load rating. At approximately 19kg for the awning assembly, the 1.7M Duo paired with carefully selected crossbars can keep your setup legal. The longer roofline of the XL actually gives you more bracket spacing options, which is a bonus for mounting.
Is the Duo 1.7M awning freestanding?
Yes. The Duo 1.7M is a freestanding 270 degree awning — it hangs from your mounting surface (roof rack or crossbars) without needing to touch the ground to hold its shape. Once the ratchet rope is tensioned, the awning is set. The telescopic leg can be dropped for optional additional support but is not required. Your rack or crossbars must be strong enough to support the awning weight.
How long does it take to set up?
Under 20 seconds once you have done it a couple of times. Unzip the bag, lift it over, release the three nylon straps, connect the ratchet rope, walk the awning around, tension the rope and you are done. One person, no tools, no help needed. The 4-arm design with one pivot point and one ratchet rope makes this genuinely one of the easiest awnings to deploy on the market.
Can one person set up the 1.7M awning?
Yes. At 19kg with a simple 4-arm design, this is one of the easiest awnings to deploy solo. No second person needed for setup or pack-down. Most Jimny and SWB owners camp solo or with a partner — this awning was designed with that in mind.
What brackets do I need for the 1.7M awning?
Brackets are sold separately because no single bracket fits every rack, crossbar and vehicle combination. Rainger offers universal 7-way adjustable L-brackets for most setups, and rack-specific options from Rhino Rack, ARB and Front Runner may also work. For Jimny owners, contact us with your crossbar brand and we will confirm the right bracket before you order. Minimum bracket spacing for the 1.7M is 700mm.
Can I use the 1.7M on a larger vehicle?
Yes. Some owners of full-size utes, wagons, canopies and American trucks deliberately choose the 1.7M for its light weight and fast setup. The thinking is simple — awnings are how you use them. Use them properly and you can get plenty of shade. Keep it small, keep it light, keep it easy, and you will actually deploy it every time you stop. An awning that stays packed because it is too heavy or too much hassle is not giving you any shade at all.
How does the LED lighting work?
The LED strips are built into the awning arms. Once the awning is deployed, plug the 4 push-in connectors into the arms and connect the 2 USB-A dimmer controllers to any USB-A power source — a power bank, vehicle USB outlet, or camp battery system. The power source is not included. Each dimmer controls a separate lighting zone so you can adjust brightness and colour temperature independently.
Can I add extra legs to the awning?
Yes. Additional telescopic legs are sold separately. They are the same leg included with the awning — each leg has a spigot that inserts into the end of any awning arm at a position where there is not an arm present. This lets you add support at any point around the awning perimeter where you feel it is needed.
What is the difference between the 1.7M and the 180° awning?
The 1.7M is a 270 degree awning that wraps across the passenger side and rear of the vehicle. The 180 degree awning covers only the side. If you need rear coverage or want to create an enclosed area with wall kits, the 270 is the better choice. If you only need side shade and want to keep the rear of the vehicle completely clear — particularly on wagons with lift-up tailgates — the 180 degree model may be more suitable. Both are freestanding and include integrated LED lighting.
Will the 1.7M awning handle strong wind?
The awning handles moderate wind well when the ratchet rope is properly tensioned. In gusty conditions, use the arm-end tie-down points with guy ropes and pegs for additional anchoring. The anti-pooling legs and rain tabs help maintain canvas shape in rain and wind. Like any fabric awning, it should be packed away in severe storm conditions to avoid damage.
