The VE.Smart Network - Why Victron Gear Works Better Together
Most 12V components work blind. A solar controller sits at the front of the system guessing what the battery needs from the only thing it can see - the voltage at its own terminals. On a long cable run, under load, or on a cold morning, that guess is wrong.
Victron solved this with the VE.Smart network. A sensing device - a SmartShunt, a BMV-712 or a Smart Battery Sense - sits at the battery and broadcasts the real voltage, temperature and current over Bluetooth. Your MPPT, your Orion DC-DC charger and your Blue Smart AC charger all listen to that broadcast and re-tune their charging to suit.
What that actually changes:
- Voltage sense - the charger compensates for cable drop and charges to the correct voltage at the battery, not at itself
- Temperature sense - charge voltage adjusts to real battery temperature, which is what protects lead-acid in summer and lithium in the cold
- Synchronised charging - multiple chargers stop fighting each other and move through the charge stages together
It costs nothing to run, needs no wiring between the units, and it is the single biggest reason to keep a system on one brand rather than mixing.
Choosing a SmartSolar MPPT
The model number tells you both limits. In a 100/30, the first number is the maximum panel open-circuit voltage the controller can survive, and the second is the maximum charge current it can deliver.
Size the voltage against the coldest morning your panels will see, not a warm afternoon - panel open-circuit voltage rises as panels get cold, and that is exactly when an oversized string can exceed the controller's ceiling. Size the current against your array wattage divided by battery voltage, then leave headroom if you plan to add panels later.
A note on IP ratings, because it matters
We publish the actual rating on every product rather than calling things waterproof. SmartSolar MPPT controllers are IP43 on the electronics and IP22 at the connection area - they belong inside a canopy or cabin, not exposed. The Orion XS and the Blue Smart IP65 chargers are genuinely IP65. BatteryProtect terminals are IP00 and must be enclosed. Fitting an IP43 controller somewhere it will get wet is not covered by warranty, and it is an easy mistake to make when a listing just says rugged.

Every Victron product carries a 5 year warranty. Victron recommend 12V electrical work be carried out by a qualified auto electrician - the fusing and cable sizing on a DC-DC or inverter install is not a plug-in job.
