Which SmartSolar MPPT do I need?

Size the controller on how much solar you will end up with, not what you have today. The controller is the part you do not want to buy twice.

In plain terms:

• 100/15 - one 200W panel. Jimny, camper trailer, small canopy
• 100/20 - a bit more headroom, and the only one here that also runs 36V and 48V banks
• 100/30 - two 200W panels or a 400W array. The usual pick for a full touring build
• 100/50 - three or four panels. Canopy roofs and caravans

The one number that actually matters: 100V

Every controller on this page accepts a maximum of 100V open-circuit from the panels. Two things follow from that, and they catch people out:

• Too much wattage is harmless. Connect more panel than the rating and the controller simply limits its own output. Nothing breaks.
• Too much voltage is fatal. Exceed 100V Voc and you can destroy the controller, and it is not a warranty claim.

Open-circuit voltage rises as temperature falls. An array that measures safely on a warm afternoon can climb over the limit on a cold morning - so size on the coldest condition the system will ever see, not the day you installed it. Check the Voc figure on your panel label and multiply it by the number of panels in series.

⚠️ One difference worth knowing before you plan the wiring: the 100/15 and 100/20 have a physical load output terminal you can run DC loads through, with automatic low-voltage disconnect. The 100/30 and 100/50 do not - Victron's manual describes a virtual load output via a VE.Direct TX cable instead. On the bigger models, wire loads to the battery and use a BatteryProtect.
