The Duo 1.7M goes from packed to fully deployed in under 20 seconds once you have done it a couple of times. One person. No tools. No help needed.
Unzip the PVC bag and lift it over the top of the awning
Release the 3 nylon straps holding the canvas up
Connect the ratchet rope to the end attachment point
Walk the awning around to its full 270 degree position
Connect the ratchet rope to a suitable tie-down point on the other side of the vehicle and tension it
Optional: Drop one or more of the four included legs for additional support
Optional: Tie down with guy ropes in gusty conditions
Optional: Attach zipper wall kits for extra shade or wind protection
That is the entire process. The ratchet rope does the work - once it is tensioned, the awning is set. The legs are there if you want additional support, but the awning holds its shape without them.
Pack-down is the same steps in reverse. At 20.5kg it is light enough to manage comfortably on your own every time. For Jimny and SWB owners who camp solo or move camp daily, this is the awning you will actually bother deploying.

Does the 1.7M awning suit the Jimny XL (5-door)?
Yes. The Jimny XL is a longer vehicle but Suzuki has not changed the 30kg dynamic roof load rating. At approximately 20.5kg for the awning assembly, the 1.7M Duo paired with carefully selected crossbars can keep your setup legal. The longer roofline of the XL actually gives you more bracket spacing options, which is a bonus for mounting.
Is the Duo 1.7M awning freestanding?
Yes. The Duo 1.7M is a freestanding 270 degree awning - it hangs from your mounting surface (roof rack or crossbars) without needing to touch the ground to hold its shape. Once the ratchet rope is tensioned, the awning is set. The included drop-down legs can be used for optional additional support but are not required. Your rack or crossbars must be strong enough to support the awning weight.
How long does it take to set up?
Under 20 seconds once you have done it a couple of times. Unzip the bag, lift it over, release the three nylon straps, connect the ratchet rope, walk the awning around, tension the rope and you are done. One person, no tools, no help needed. The 4-arm design with one pivot point and one ratchet rope makes this genuinely one of the easiest awnings to deploy on the market.
Can one person set up the 1.7M awning?
Yes. At 20.5kg with a simple 4-arm design, this is one of the easiest awnings to deploy solo. No second person needed for setup or pack-down. Most Jimny and SWB owners camp solo or with a partner - this awning was designed with that in mind.
What brackets do I need for the 1.7M awning?
Brackets are sold separately because no single bracket fits every rack, crossbar and vehicle combination. Rainger offers universal 7-way adjustable L-brackets for most setups, with confirmed fitment on ARB Heavy Duty awning brackets (Base Rack, part 1780390), the Mega Jimny MGX PRO and Skinny Jim racks, and rack-specific options from Rhino Rack, Front Runner, Yakima and Rola may also work. For Jimny owners, contact us with your crossbar brand and we will confirm the right bracket before you order. Minimum bracket spacing for the 1.7M is 700mm.
Which wall positions suit the Jimny?
Wall position 3 suits the Jimny. Wall position 4 sits over the tailgate area and is shaped for dual cab use - it is not suitable for the Jimny tailgate. Every position carries an outdoor-rated zipper with a numbered label, so the right wall lands first time.

How does the LED lighting work?
The LED strips are built into the awning arms. Once the awning is deployed, plug the 4 push-in connectors into the arms and connect the 2 USB-A dimmer controllers to any USB-A power source - a power bank, vehicle USB outlet, or camp battery system. The power source is not included. Each dimmer controls a separate lighting zone so you can adjust brightness and colour temperature independently.
Can I add extra legs to the awning?
The 1.7M ships with four drop-down legs included on the awning. If you want support at additional points, extra legs are sold separately - contact us and we will match the right legs to your setup.
What is the difference between the 1.7M and the 180 degree awning?
The 1.7M is a 270 degree awning that wraps across the passenger side and rear of the vehicle. The 180 degree awning covers only the side. If you need rear coverage or want to create an enclosed area with wall kits, the 270 is the better choice. If you only need side shade and want to keep the rear of the vehicle completely clear - particularly on wagons with lift-up tailgates - the 180 degree model may be more suitable. Both are freestanding and include integrated LED lighting.
Will the 1.7M awning handle strong wind?
The awning handles moderate wind well when the ratchet rope is properly tensioned. In gusty conditions, use the arm-end tie-down points with guy ropes and pegs for additional anchoring. The legs and rain tabs help maintain canvas shape in rain and wind. Like any fabric awning, it should be packed away in severe storm conditions to avoid damage.
What if I pack the awning away wet?
Air it out before long-term storage. The bag's anti-wick tongue and Velcro storm flaps limit how much water gets in while driving, but they do not eliminate it entirely. Water sitting inside a closed bag for extended periods will cause mould on any canvas, regardless of brand. Check the bag periodically, especially after wet trips, and open it up to dry if needed.
