Product Description
The Victron BatteryProtect 65A is a low voltage disconnect for the load side of a 12V or 24V system. It watches battery voltage and cuts non-essential loads off before the battery is discharged far enough to damage it. It runs from 6V to 35V, so one part covers both 12V and 24V installs. Two versions are available - the Smart, set up over Bluetooth from your phone, and the standard, set on the unit with the PROG pin.
This is the set-and-forget protection layer in a dual battery or camper system. Fridges, lights, water pumps, device chargers - anything you would rather lose than replace a battery over goes downstream of the BatteryProtect. It carries 65A continuous with 250A peak for 30 seconds.
One direction only - IN to OUT
The BatteryProtect goes between the battery and the loads, and current flows IN to OUT only. Reverse current through the device will damage it - the unit reports error E8. Never connect an inverter or an inverter/charger to a BatteryProtect via its DC input. Control those by their remote on/off port instead. The same rule applies to any load with large DC input capacitors.
Smart or standard - which one do I need?
Electrically they are the same device - same current rating, thresholds, delays, IP rating, terminal, dimensions and warranty. The difference is how you program it.
- Smart - Bluetooth built in. Set up and monitor from VictronConnect, with PIN protection. Ten factory presets plus any custom disconnect and reconnect level your battery maker asks for.
- Standard - no radio. Programmed on the unit with the PROG pin, choosing from the same ten presets. Custom levels are not available.
Pick the Smart if your battery maker specifies a disconnect voltage that is not one of the presets, or if you want to check it without pulling a panel off. Pick the standard if a preset suits your battery - and mount it somewhere you can still reach if the setting ever needs changing.
Is 65A enough?
Size it to the total continuous current of the loads you are protecting, not to the battery. Add up everything downstream that could run at once. A 400Ah battery bank behind 45A of loads still only needs the 65A. The 250A peak is for switch-on surge, not continuous running.
Key features
- Two programming options - Bluetooth on the Smart, PROG pin on the standard, the same ten presets on both
- Automatic 12V and 24V operation - 6V to 35V, with 24V thresholds exactly double the 12V figures
- Very low standby draw - Smart 1.4mA on and 0.9mA off; standard 1.5mA on and 0.6mA off
- Built-in delays - 90 seconds before disconnect, 30 seconds before reconnect, so a momentary sag does not shut the fridge down
- BMS trigger input - a BMS-commanded disconnect is immediate
- Alarm output - trips 12 seconds ahead of disconnect
- Potted electronics - IP67 on the electronics, IP00 on the connections
The ten presets
12V disconnect/reconnect pairs, the same on both versions. On 24V every figure doubles. Factory setting is preset 0.
- 0 - 10.5V / 12.0V (default)
- 1 - 10.0V / 11.5V
- 2 - 9.5V / 11.5V
- 3 - 11.25V / 13.25V
- 4 - 11.5V / 13.8V
- 5 - 10.5V / 12.8V
- 6 - 11.5V / 12.8V
- 7 - 11.8V / 12.8V
- 8 - 12.0V / 13.0V
- 9 - 10.0V / 13.2V
Mounting it
- No orientation requirement - mount it whichever way suits the wiring run.
- Well ventilated, preferably within 50cm of the battery.
- Not directly above the battery - corrosive gases rise off a battery.
- Terminal: M6 stud, torque to 5 Nm.
- Wiring direction: battery to IN, loads to OUT. Never the other way.
- Fusing: fit a properly sized fuse between the battery and the BatteryProtect to local regulations. The GND wire needs only 300mA.
- Heat: full load from -40C to +40C. At 50C it is limited to 60% of nominal load - factor that in for a hot canopy or under-bonnet spot.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Smart and the standard BatteryProtect?
Only how you program it. The Smart has Bluetooth, so you set it up in VictronConnect and can use any custom disconnect and reconnect level as well as the ten presets. The standard is programmed with the PROG pin and is limited to the ten presets.
Can I run my inverter through a BatteryProtect?
No. Reverse current from an inverter or inverter/charger will damage it. Use the inverter's remote on/off port instead. The same applies to any load with large DC input capacitors.
Is it waterproof?
The potted electronics are IP67, but the connections are IP00 - bare terminals. Mount it where the terminals stay dry and protected.
Why has it not switched my loads back on yet?
Reconnect waits 30 seconds after voltage recovers so loads do not chatter on and off. Disconnect waits 90 seconds, with the alarm output tripping 12 seconds before that. A BMS-commanded disconnect is immediate.
