Why mould appears — and why it's almost never a product fault

Mould spores are present in the air everywhere. They're not introduced by a faulty product — they're ambient. What determines whether they establish and grow is the environment they land in. Mould needs three things: a surface to grow on, moisture, and warmth. A sealed rooftop tent packed away with residual moisture provides all three, repeatedly, through daily heat cycling.

This is consistently the pattern reported across RTT ownership groups: mould appearing not after a single wet night, but after a trip where the tent was packed damp and not reopened for weeks. The mould didn't form in camp. It formed in the garage. The heat of a black alloy shell in direct sun drives any moisture in the tent into the air as vapour during the day — when it cools at night, that vapour condenses back onto the coldest surfaces. Canvas joins, seal rubber, mattress edges, and the perimeter floor are the first areas affected because they're the coldest and least ventilated points in a sealed tent. What black mould in an RTT actually is

The dark spotting commonly called "black mould" in RTT contexts is most often Cladosporium or Aspergillus species — common environmental moulds that colonise fabric and rubber surfaces in damp conditions. True Stachybotrys chartarum (the toxic black mould associated with building materials) requires sustained saturation over weeks and is rarely what's found on tent canvas.

What RTT owners are typically dealing with is surface mould — established in the top layer of the fabric or rubber, appearing as dark spots or a diffuse grey-green discolouration, often accompanied by a musty smell. Surface mould is cleanable. It hasn't penetrated the fabric structure and hasn't compromised the material's integrity if caught reasonably early.

Left untreated over multiple seasons, mould can become embedded in the fabric weave, cause fabric degradation, and produce persistent odour that's difficult to fully remove. Early intervention is significantly easier than late-stage treatment.


Where it appears first — and what that tells you

The location of early mould growth is diagnostic. It tells you where moisture is concentrating in your specific setup:

  • Along the canvas joins and seam lines — moisture wicking along the thread path, or condensation concentrating at the structural edge where canvas meets frame. Most common location across forum reports.

  • Under the mattress or mat edges — moisture trapped beneath the sleeping surface with no airflow. Often the result of not propping the mattress during morning airing. Covered in the floor moisture guide.
  • On the canvas near windows and zippers — moisture concentrating at the perimeter of openings, sometimes from wicking along the zipper tape or mesh edges.
  • On bedding stored inside — if bedding was closed inside a damp tent, it absorbs moisture progressively during heat cycling and can develop mould independently of the tent fabric.

A single location suggests a specific moisture source. Mould appearing broadly across multiple surfaces suggests the tent was consistently packed away with significant moisture present.


How to clean it — the right products and process

Before starting any cleanup, open the tent fully in an outdoor area with good airflow and direct sunlight if possible. UV is genuinely effective at killing surface mould spores — an hour of direct sun exposure on the affected area while dry is a useful first step before applying any product.

For canvas and fabric surfaces

A diluted white vinegar solution (approximately 1 part white vinegar to 1 part water) is effective on early to moderate surface mould on canvas. Apply with a soft brush, work gently into the affected area, and allow to sit for 10–15 minutes before wiping with a clean damp cloth. Vinegar is a mild acid that disrupts mould cell structure without the fabric damage risk that bleach carries at full concentration.

For more established mould, a specialist canvas cleaner — products designed specifically for canvas tents and awnings — is a better option than household cleaners. These are formulated to treat mould without stripping the canvas's water-repellent treatment. Check the product is compatible with PU-backed fabrics if that applies to your tent.

Avoid bleach on canvas where possible. A heavily diluted solution (no more than 1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be used on stubborn spots as a last resort, but bleach degrades canvas fibres over time and will strip any DWR or PU treatment at the application point, requiring reproofing afterward.

For rubber seals

White vinegar solution works well on rubber seal mould — apply, allow to sit briefly, and wipe clean with a cloth. For the seal surface texture where mould can sit in the micro-grooves, a soft toothbrush allows more precise cleaning without damaging the rubber. Follow with a silicone-based rubber conditioner once clean and dry — this restores flexibility and creates a slightly less hospitable surface for future mould adhesion.

For the alloy floor and PU-backed internal surfaces

Mould rarely establishes on PU-backed surfaces or bare alloy — these are non-porous and don't provide the organic material mould prefers. If you find mould-like growth on these surfaces it's typically surface contamination from adjacent fabric. Wipe with a diluted vinegar solution and dry thoroughly. The wipeable nature of PU-backed internals is an advantage here — the same surface that makes condensation management easier makes mould cleanup faster.

After cleaning — the full dry-out

After treating any mould, the tent needs to be fully dry before closing. Set it up in direct sunlight with all openings wide open for several hours. The combination of UV, airflow, and low humidity is the most effective post-treatment environment. Closing a tent that's been cleaned but not fully dried simply restarts the cycle.

Stopping it from coming back

The short version: pack away genuinely dry, not just dry enough to close. Wipe the seal area and floor before closing. Air the mattress briefly when conditions allow. And understand your tent's behaviour in your specific storage environment — a tent consistently opened to dry conditions doesn't need the same attention as one in a humid coastal garage.

Silica gel for long-term storage:

They won't compensate for a tent packed away wet — but as a last line of defence after a correct pack-down, they're a worthwhile addition for coastal climates or extended off-season storage.

The tent was used on a trip involving rain or high condensation. Pack-down was done in a hurry — on-site before driving home, often without a full airing. The tent wasn't reopened for several weeks. A second common pattern: tents stored through winter without being opened. The cooler, more humid months create ideal conditions for slow mould development in a sealed tent — particularly in coastal or high-humidity storage environments. Opening the tent at the start of the season and finding mould that wasn't present at the end of the previous season is almost always a storage humidity issue, not ingress.

Frequently asked questions

Is mould in my tent covered under warranty?

Mould resulting from condensation or storage habits is a maintenance issue, not a manufacturing defect, and is excluded from warranty across the RTT category. This is standard across all brands. Mould resulting from a genuine ingress fault — water getting in through a failed seam or seal that was defective from manufacture — is a different matter and would typically be a warranty consideration. Can I use a pressure washer to clean the canvas?

Not recommended. High pressure drives water through the canvas weave and can damage the PU backing or seam sealing. A soft brush, gentle hand washing with appropriate canvas cleaner, and thorough air drying is the correct process. Pressure washing may remove surface mould visually while forcing it deeper into the fabric structure and damaging the waterproofing in the process.

The mould smell is gone but the staining remains — is it still active?

Mould staining on canvas can persist after the mould itself has been killed and removed — the discolouration is a byproduct left in the fabric fibres rather than live mould. If the smell is gone and the area feels dry and clean, the mould is likely no longer active. The staining is cosmetic. A canvas reproofing spray applied over the cleaned area after a full dry-out can help restore the surface treatment and reduce the likelihood of future colonisation at the same spot.

Does mould affect waterproofing?

Surface mould on canvas can degrade the DWR (durable water repellent) treatment over time at the affected area, reducing how well water beads off that section of fabric. After a full mould treatment and dry-out, applying a canvas reproofing spray to the affected area restores the water repellency. PU-backed fabrics are less susceptible to this because the waterproofing is in the backing layer rather than the surface treatment.

I bought a secondhand tent with mould — is it salvageable?

Usually yes, if the mould is surface-level and hasn't been left for multiple seasons. A thorough treatment with canvas cleaner, a full UV dry-out, and a reproofing application can restore most secondhand tents to functional condition. Inspect the canvas closely for any structural degradation — thin spots, brittleness, or areas where the backing has separated — which would indicate the mould has been present long enough to damage the fabric itself. Those areas may need panel replacement rather than cleaning.
